The Champion’s Centre: Solving The Homelessness Problem

The Champion’s Centre is opening a new rooming house in Medicine Hat this coming June 21, 2006. Located at 435 North Railway S.E., the centre will provide permanent affordable housing for the low-income and disabled. The opening is scheduled for 1:30PM with the program starting at 2PM.

As a source of permanent housing The Champion’s Centre offers an important network of support for people who cannot afford to live on their own. The Champion’s Centre is a non-profit Christian charity that aims to provide social and spiritual support to its residents through low-income housing and non-denominational spiritual counseling. Operating as more than just a shelter, The Champion’s Centre provides a community space where individuals struggling with physical and mental disabilities and chronic unemployment and homelessness can reintegrate into society.

The opening of the Medicine Hat centre marks the successful expansion of the Champion’s Centre organization from the original centre founded in Ponoka, Alberta in June of 2002. Dr. Austin Mardon, noted schizophrenic advocate and member of The Champion’s Centre national board said, "The second Champion’s Centre to be opened in Canada is a significant event for solving the problem of homelessness in Medicine Hat, Alberta and Canada, and is a sign that other Champion’s Centres will exist in the near future in Canada."
